about

The first track of my upcoming EP 'Winter Flowers', 'Farewell / Here's The Tender Coming' is a combination of two tunes that are deeply rooted in the Northumbrian folk tradition.The first tune ‘Farewell’ was lifted from the The Northumbrian Pipers’ Third Tune Book. The lyrics I wrote for this plaintive little melody, simply described as ‘a slow highland air’, depict the moment of parting and its aftermath. ‘Here’s The Tender Coming’ is a traditional Northumbrian song that recalls the practices of the notorious pressgangs that used to frequent the port of Newcastle during the Napoleonic wars.

lyrics

Fare thee well, my sweet lassie
Fare thee well, I must depart
Soon our crew must travel onwards
And our ship will drift beneath the stars

Many nights I look up at the sky, and wander
Where she might be sleeping now
I sit at the prow, in thoughts beside her
Soft, as moonlight on her brow

-----

Here’s the tender coming, pressing all the men;
Oh, dear hinny, what’ll we do then?
Here’s the tender coming, off at Shield’s Bar,
Here’s the tender coming, full of men-o’-war.

Here’s the tender coming, pressing of me dear;
Oh, dear hinny, they’ll ship you out of here
They will ship you foreign, that is what it means;
Here’s the tender coming, full of red marines.

Hey, bonny lassie, let’s gan tae the Lawe,
See the tender lying, off at Shield’s Bar
With her colours flying, anchor at the bow
They took my bonny laddie, best of all the crew.

Hide, canny laddie, hide theeself away
Hide till the frigate makes for Druridge Bay
If they take ye hinny, who’s to win our bread?
Me and little Jackie better off be dead.

Here’s the tender coming, pressing all the men;
Oh, dear hinny, what’ll we do then?
Here’s the tender coming, off at Shield’s Bar,
Here’s the tender coming, full of men-o’-war.
